Nestling in a valley amongst the Eifel Hills near Aachen but only 5km from the Belgian border, Monschau really is one of Europe’s best kept secrets. The Monschau Christmas Market is small but beautiful and we have also included two other well-known Christmas Markets for you to enjoy.
Friday: After collecting you from local pick up points we make our way to Kent for the short channel crossing. From here we continue through France and Belgium across the German border to Monschau and our hotel arriving in time for dinner. If time allows you may be able to fit in a short visit to the market this evening.
Saturday: After breakfast, we make our way across the border into Holland to visit Maastricht Christmas Market, one of the top Christmas Markets in the Netherlands. Maastricht is a wonderful city but around Christmas it takes on that extra spellbinding edge, going into full Christmas mode! The Christmas market is held at Vrijthof square, skating on the ice rink and snacks of brockwurst and gluhwein are readily available as you search out those Christmas presents at the numerous stalls. After enjoying the wonderful Christmas atmosphere here you might like to visit the cosy little streets of the Jekerkwartier neighbourhood. After our visit here we return to Monschau where you will have time this evening to explore the small but beautiful Christmas Market. You will find brilliant decorations, artistic crafts, and interesting gift ideas as well as traditional delicacies such as Bratwurst, mulled wine, Lebkuchen and Printen. Monschau also has a very popular Christmas Shop, this typical style building offers wonderful Christmas decorations for sale on all 3 floors. Various musical interludes are provided throughout the weekend around the streets all adding to the charm of this special place.
Sunday: Today you have the morning to explore the pretty town of Monschau a little more. This afternoon we travel the short distance to Aachen to visit its brightly lit Christmas Market which is set around the cathedral and town hall. This "Christmas village" on the market square has everything your heart could desire. One local specialty you really must try is the Aachen Printen, a kind of gingerbread.
Monday: After breakfast we check-out of the hotel and make our way back for the short channel crossing and home to East Anglia.
